Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) are more commonly known and referred to as drones. Drones are a type of aircraft with no onboard crew or passengers and can be piloted remotely or autonomously.
Transport Canada regulates the use of all aircraft, manned and unmanned, which by definition includes aerial drones. Permission to operate a drone is required in certain cases by applying for a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC).
If your company uses a small drone for surveying purposes, aerial photography, inspection, farming or any other commercial activity, contact our experienced brokers to discuss insurance for drones.
Commercial drone insurance includes damage to and loss of the drone itself, ground station equipment, drone-mounted devices such as cameras, and spare parts.
Additionally, there is coverage for Commercial General Liability, which is specifically extended to cover the Drone Liability, that will cover Bodily Injury and Property Damage to Third Parties. For example, the Drone falling onto a vehicle, causing property damage.
IMPORTANT REMINDER for Applicants: Transport Canada (TC) rules require, as one condition for exemption from a Special Flight Operations Certificate, that formal UAV training will have been completed including, as a minimum, successful completion of the minimum knowledge requirements for UAV Pilots.
